The Imperial Porphyry Quarries, commonly called Mons Porphyries, are the only Egyptian source of porphyry, the valued, beautiful purple stone known as Imperial Porphyry, coveted by three centuries of Roman emperors, was quarried. The quarries stood high on the mountain side, while the quarrymen who worked out the stone lived and worshipped on the lower flanks of the mountain and in the wadi bed.
The quarries lie in Red Sea Mountains of Egypt. The purple Imperial Porphyry is found nowhere else in the world, except in these mountains (together with other types of Porphyry) and the Romans went to extraordinary lengths to acquire substantial amounts of it.
