Carrara marble is famous throughout the world for its intrinsic characteristics which have allowed the creation of great works of art , historical monuments and buildings of great importance . Among the artists who were most fascinated by the beauty of the stone, it is necessary to mention Michelangelo , who used to go to the Apuan Alps (where the marble is extracted) to choose the best material to sculpt. Thanks to the presence of Carrara marble, many sculptures such as the David and the Pietà have been created , as well as many other works of art created by the equally famous Bernini , Canova and Donatello .

White Carrara marble

White Carrara marble is in turn classified into other variants, based on the whiteness and other characteristics. For example, " Bianco C " and " Bianco CD " are defined as two types of White Carrara Marble which respectively have a whiter background and a slightly grayer one. It is the most classic of Carrara marbles.

The typical characteristic of white Carrara marble is the thin , homogeneous and compact grain, which has a high quantity of calcium carbonate and a low refractive index. This last element allows the stone to have a special shine which can give great brightness to the environments where it will be inserted.

The Carrara marble quarries

Massa Carrara marble is well known throughout the world and, as written in the previous paragraphs, it was one of the favorite materials of famous artists and historians. The marble extracted in Carrara, particularly from the quarries of the Apuan Alps , is known as one of the most valuable marbles, used for the creation of sculptures and monuments which still attract millions of visitors today.
The quarries of Carrara have been used since ancient times, in particular during the Iron Age for the construction of necropolises , as attested by the marble fragments found by archaeologists.

White Carrara marble

White Carrara marble is one of the best known and most appreciated marbles and the quarries of the Apuan Alps of Carrara are among the oldest in the world, a place where entire generations of quarrymen have grown up and have handed down this age-old art to the present day. The element that distinguishes this stone is its white colour, with light gray or black veins, and precisely because of this aspect it was considered one of the purest and most perfect. Even today there are many works and monuments entirely made with this material: among the artists who used white Carrara marble, Michelangelo is certainly among the best known. It is precisely from the blocks obtained in Carrara that La Pietà, one of the most famous masterpieces of all time, came to life.
